Common Treatment Options for Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

To date, treatment options for IC symptoms have relied heavily on behavioral changes. It is important for you to make changes to your lifestyle in order to help manage your IC and your overall health. This may include removing some of the foods that you may love, but may act as trigger points to flare-ups for your IC.

According to the AUA Guidelines, these self-management treatments include:

  • – Adequate water intake
  • – Diet modification to avoid foods that trigger flare-ups
  • – Over the counter supplements and vitamins such as Prelief® and CystoProtek®
  • – Stress management
  • – Avoiding activities that may trigger flare-ups including sexual intercourse, kegel exercises, etc.

Over-the-counter products such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen are also used to help control pain symptoms. Oral prescription medications such as antidepressants and antihistamines are also common.

As a second-line treatment, according to the AUA Guidelines, oral medications including Elmiron®, and bladder instillations have become common treatment options for IC patients.
