American Urological Association (AUA) Guidelines

The AUA has published guidelines for physicians who treat IC. The treatment guidelines were developed to provide guidance to physicians when considering treatment. However, it’s important to understand that they also provide a good baseline for how you can best manage your symptoms.

AUA treatment guidelines include:

  • Adequate water intake
  • Diet modification (i.e., avoiding any foods that trigger or worsen your symptoms)
  • Hot/cold packs
  • OTC products for pain (e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen)
  • Prescription oral medications
  • Bladder instillations
  • If first and second line treatments fail to provide relief, other treatments may include hydrodistention with cystoscopy, Botox® injections, and Cyclosporine
  • Meditation and stress management
  • Treatment of other sources of discomfort
  • Avoidance of any activities that may worsen the condition
